Will Gas Prices Affect Retail Spending?

This article, "Will gas prices hit retail stocks?", talks about the threat that rising gas prices will have a negative impact on shareholders of retail stock. Some believe that current gas prices are enough to impact spending on retail purchases, but others believe gas prices will have to rise even more to make people change their spending habits. So far there have not been any significant changes in retail spending. In fact, gas consumption has actually INCREASED over the last month, despite the rise in price. Analysts think that companies that cater to the wealthy, such as Tiffany and Prada, will not be affected much, but they are not sure about companies who are supported mostly by lower-income consumers. Michael Cox, a senior retail analyst at Piper Jaffray, believes that consumers will start to change their spending habits when gas prices reach about $2.50 a gallon. A recent survey taken found that twenty-one percent of people said they would spend less on clothes, twenty-eight percent said they would spend less on travel, and thirty-five percent said they would start looking for a more fuel-efficient car. Another economist, Rich Hastings, believes that as gas prices continue to rise, companies like Wal-Mart will flourish because of their low prices.

I do believe consumers will stop spending as much if the gas prices rise any higher. We will also pay higher prices for all products that cater through delivery. Because if it is delivered then you have to use a car and if you are using a car then you are using gas. One good thing that may come out of a rise in price is that people may start using more efficent means of transportation.

I believe that consumers will eventually spend less at retail stores due to the increase in gas prices. Although people are still purchasing more gas, they will have to give up something to buy more gas. If gas reaches to about $2.75 per gallon then we will see a lot of cutbacks on retail for the low income consumer.

I think that increasing gas prices will have a big impact on retail spending. Americans will not buy as much because they will have to budget their money for other expenses due to inflation. Retail prices will also increase due to increasing gas prices, which will affect business profits.

I believe that as consumers are forced to pay higher gas prices and their disposible incomes shrink proportionally that their retail spending will definitely be affected. I doubt that many working class families included a dollar-plus per gallon increase in their budgets. I'm unaware of any businesses that have given their employees cost of living raises to offset the gas price increase. Consumers will naturally have to make adjustments in their spending habits, particularly on "luxury items".

i do believe that that the high price of gas will sooner or later stop consumers spending at retail stores. Most consumers need to drive a car, which in turn mean their using gas. Being a consumer I watch would I spend my money on, I don't buy many extra's compared the extra that I did year ago.

I know that I personally make every trip in my car count. In other words I plan where I need to go before I get in the car. If I forget to get something I need, I get it the next time I go out. I no longer make special trips for things that I can do without. I imagine that many Americans feel the same way.

I don't know if consumers will spend more or less. One thing is for sure, if you own a car then you need gasoline. People don't want to see an increase in gas, but they use it. The market for small vehicles might rise, but I am not sure about the other markets.

In response to the ammount of retail spending that gas prices will affect in consumers income. Many consumers will be affected as the price of gas increases while their income remains constant. I believe that because of, a certain ammount of consumers disposable income will be shifted to cushion increasing energy costs. Unless there is a contingency plan develped by each consumer to replace the increase in costs, consumers will be left without the same purchase power in the past. Consumers must be able to keep the income allotted for certain purchases as variable as the pries of fule and the ammount they use to compete.

As a shop-a-holic speaking the gas prices has definitely put a damper on my parade. Now there is a decision to buy a new outfit or get a full tank of gas? At one point in time a full tank of gas would only cause me to sacrifice a shirt now it is a whole outfit. This madness must be stopped! Please lower the gas price! SMILE:)
