The Evoloving Role and Current Challenges of the International Monetary Fund After 60 Years
As the International Monetary Fund (IMF) stands in its 60th year, its Managing Director, Rodrigo de Rato met with the Council on Foreign Relations. The topic of discussion at this September 20, 2004, meeting over breakfast, addressed the IMF's evoloving role and current challenges. Mr. de Rato proclaimed that the 60th anniversary has "energized a broad examination--inside the Fund, as well as among member governments and outside observers", He then went ahead to analyze the current challenges and role of the IMF in each of the following areas:
1. Responding to Change in the Global Economy
2. Global Outlook
3. Financial Stability
4. Crisis Management and Resolution
5. The Fund's Role in Low Income Countries
Mr. de Rato stated that the IMF's ideas for moving positively forward on each of the aforementioned challenges are to have each country strengthen existing policies and engage new policies for debt control as well as the IMF providing incentive plans for those countries that do.
